11 Million Takeover Day gave pupils a chance to take over the jobs of adults at Boston Borough Council for the day. A positive outcome of the event was the preparatory work and the follow up sessions that gave the children a sense of accomplishment. The preparatory work was vital for the children to get the benefit of the day. The staff that came to support on these tasks are excellent and made it easier for the children to work well on the day
The organisational side of the event by the whole team at Boston Borough Council was flawless. Regular meetings with the staff at Boston Borough Council enabled the pastoral team in school to disseminate to the teaching staff about the timetable of events without disruption to normal school activities. The year group was divided into three groups. As a large, class, it worked well because all the pupils felt they had a specific part to play in to the day.
The group performing the play gained lots of skills for performing, learned and understood some of the key aspects of climate change, were able to voice their opinions to the public, and worked with adults around their community to support an important cause for their future. Pupil participation is a big part of Eco Schools Status, which we are trying to obtain.
The group creating the recycling wheel will be sending out the message of recycling to wider community long after the events of 11 million day and will be encouraging children in Boston to participate in recycling for the future. This is also beneficial for us a school towards Eco Schools Status.
The group delivering the survey to the public were fantastic, talking to the general public and gaining large amounts of data for the Borough Council to help implement new initiatives. This gives the children a sense of achievement and that they have really made a difference to the place they live in.
Evaluations from staff and pupils after the event show that the children remember everything about the event because of the work they did prior the 11 million take over day. This was vital to give them the confidence to produce their best work and give them the knowledge base to produce a successful event.
The School really appreciates the hard work done by the team at Boston Borough Council and especially Maddy who co ordinated the event. We would love to do something like this again in the future.
