Year 4 work

Welcome to Year 4!

We have a really exciting year of learning ahead and some wonderful experiences for the children to enjoy.

During these first weeks back, we have been reading When Jessie came across the Sea by Amy Hest in Literacy. We have used this to improve our writing skills, practising changing verbs into past tense, choosing exciting adjectives and adverbs. This book has the historical setting of the mass immigration from Europe to America in the early 1900s. At the moment, the children are enjoying our class reading book, The Lion and the Unicorn by Shirley Hughes, which also has an historical setting of an evacuee in the Second World War.

In Numeracy, we have been concentrating on learning our place value and how to partition numbers. The children particularly enjoyed a session of place value bingo!

Our topic, Survival – Food and Farming, kicked off with a trip across the Atlantic to America on a ship, as the refugees from Europe did in the early 1900s! On this pretend voyage, the children brought a parcel of food and items for the journey. They also had a taste of gruel, ships biscuits and limes (see Mr Alderton if you would like the recipes)! During this experience the children learned about the available food choices of the time and how food is preserved. During the last week, we have been looking at where their food comes from and how many miles it has to travel to get to our plate.

If you have any questions about your child’s learning or would like to volunteer to help in school please do not hesitate to contact me.
